Sony said Friday that it had begun the first shipments of its 25GB single layer discs, and it expected to debut a 50GB dual layer version in June. The discs include the company's proprietary AccuCore technology that offers enhanced reliability and durability, and also made it possible for Sony to offer the discs without a protective cartridge. The discs support a 2x transfer speed and a data transfer rate of 72 Mbps.

The 25GB write-once and rewritable discs will have a retail price of USD $20 and USD $25, respectively. When launched in June, the 50GB discs would retail for USD $48 and USD $60, Sony said. The company also said Friday that its Blu-ray Disc Association had recently surpassed 160 members, which plan to begin releasing the first players and PCs compatible with the format beginning this summer.

Sony Delays First Blu-ray Movies

Supporters of HD DVD have another reason to be happy Thursday as Sony announced that it would delay the release of the first Blu-ray discs until June 20. However, according to company executives, the delay is not due to any issues with the discs.

The initial Blu-ray movies are still expected to be completed and ready to ship by the previous May 23 deadline. But retail and hardware partners asked for a one-month delay so that the releases would coincide with the first commercially available players.

To be released June 20 is "Underworld Evolution" (arriving the same day as the DVD), "50 First Dates," "The Fifth Element," "Hitch," "House of Flying Daggers," "A Knight's Tale," "The Last Waltz," "Resident Evil Apocalypse" and "XXX."

The first Blu-ray player is to come from Samsung, and that device has been delayed until June 25. Its $999 USD price tag is expected to make it the cheapest Blu-ray disc player for at least several months.

Most players based on the high-definition DVD technology have been priced in the $1,000 to $2,000 USD range.

Warner Home Video is also expected to ship its Blu-ray movie titles at about the same time as the Samsung launch, but the company has not announced a firm date.

iTunes still at 99 cents

This entry was posted in the following categories: Entertainment, News

itunes.jpgAll of the iTunes deals with record companies are set to expire over the next two months, and the negotions are starting to lean in Steve Jobs' favor. The record companies had originally wanted to go the route of variable pricing -- as in jacking up the rates of popular songs, of course. Less popular tracks and back catalog would have been offered at a rate lower than 99 cents. iTunes customers were not happy about this possible new deal, and that could have spelled disaster for the booming music download service.

New technology may force TV ad viewing

This entry was posted in the following categories: Entertainment, News

From Dallas Morning News

SAN JOSE, Calif. — In this era of easy ad skipping with TiVo-like video recorders, could television viewers one day be forced to watch commercials with a system that prevents channel switching?

Yes, according to Royal Philips Electronics. A patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office says researchers of the Netherland-based consumer electronics company have created a technology that could let broadcasters freeze a channel during a commercial, so viewers wouldn't be able to avoid it.

The pending patent, published on March 30, says the feature would be implemented on a program-by-program basis. Devices that could carry the technology would be a television or a set-top-box.

Philips acknowledged, however, that the anti-channel changing technology might not sit well with consumers and suggested in its patent filing that consumers be allowed to avoid the feature if they paid broadcasters a fee.

Panasonic unveils 103-inch TV screen

This entry was posted in the following categories: Entertainment, News

Home TV screens just keep getting bigger. And there's no end in sight. Panasonic pitched a tent outside the New York Stock Exchange yesterday to show off the biggest high-definition plasma screen yet.

At 103 inches, it's an inch bigger than versions being produced by Samsung and LG.

Panasonic vice president Andrew Nelkin says the new screen weighs 400 pounds. If you buy one, and have a wall big enough to fit it, you'll want professional installation.

He also says he wouldn't be surprised to see someone come up with an even bigger screen before long.
