In October 2005, Yahoo and Microsoft announced that they will soon be adding interoperability between their instant messaging offerings - Yahoo Messenger and Live Messenger.

As reported, interoperability between the two competing services would occur in Q2 (Quarter two) of 2006. Now that it is Q2 of 2006, we should be expecting these new capabilities soon, according to Leah, a MSN Product Manager.
