Today, The New York Times released a new redesign of their website, announced by Leonard M. Apcar, editor in chief of the NYTimes online edition.

Many people have been commenting that the design is based on weblogs, and others are saying that bloggers have something to learn from the new Times redesign.

One of the noticeable changes in the design is the fact that it makes use of large monitors by being able to expand indefinitely. The space provided by the new design allows them to better place advertisements as well as more content.

Many blogs have been experimenting with this new design layout - having the columns expand as large as the screen resolution can go to make reader easier on the eyes.

However, according to Anil Dash at Six Apart, other popular newspapers have had their websites redesigned based on blogs, such as the recent redesign of the New York Magazine. It's exciting to see that weblogs influence popular websites, because it shows that popular web services pay attention to blogs.

Some six or so of Nokia's handsets have been delayed by some unspecified software issues. These include the N91, N71, N80, E60, E61 and E71.

The highly anticipated N91 music phone with 4GB hard disk drive should finally be coming sometime this week, with the other two N-series handsets shipping a little later this month.

The E-series was targeted for a late March release, but now it's anyone's guess.

Nokia plans on showing off the 6136 UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) handset at this week's CTIA Wireless 2006 show in Las Vegas.

Former top Microsoft developer Charles Simonyi is planning a trip to the International Space Station aboard a Russian rocket, according to the RIA news agency. It would make him the world's fifth space tourist.

A Russian space program spokesman said: "A preliminary contract with Simonyi has been concluded for spring 2007."

Hungarian-born Simonyi has done very nicely, thank you, out of his work at Microsoft overseeing their applications development, and latterly founded business specialist Intentional Software.

He has become something of a philanthropist, funding Richard Dawkins' contoversial Public Understanding of Science Chair at Oxford University. It's reported Charlie's space adventures will set him back a cool $20million.

MS to run Linux with virtual server

CNet reports that Microsoft will support customers who chose to run Linux with Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005 R2, software for running multiple operating systems on one machine.

In addition, the company on Monday said that it has now made Virtual Server 2005 R2--which the company had charged either $99 for up to four physical processors or $199 for an unlimited number of processors--a free download. The announcements were made in conjunction with the LinuxWorld conference in Boston this week.

Virtualization, an emerging technology which is garnering growing interest from corporate customers, allows a server to run multiple instances of an operating system. This makes it easier for corporations to consolidate many applications on a single hardware server and provides a level of reliabilty.

Microsoft said that it has developed software to simplify the installation of Linux distributions from Red Hat and Novell SuSE to run on Virtual Server 2005 R2 on Windows. In addition, Microsoft will provide technical support customers running Windows and Linux side by side.

"We’ve made a long-term commitment to make sure that non-Windows operating systems can be run in a supported manner, both on top of Virtual Server and our future virtualization products," said Zane Adam, director of Windows Server product marketing, in a statement.

Microsoft has said that the server edition of Windows Vista will have virtualization built into it. Specifically, it said it is developing so-called hypervisor software, code-named Viridian, to host multiple operating systems on one machine.

Microsoft faces competition in the market from EMC subsidiary VMware and increasingly the Xen project that's being built into forthcoming versions of Suse Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
