Dealhack.com  has a great rundown/checklist of what to look for, how to look for it, the best plan for your needs, to buy from the wireless provider or elsewhere, etc.

After reading this, I found that it would be extremely helpful for someone who is unsure what they want or even what they need.

Of course, I'm partial to the Treo, but that's me.  I hope someone finds this helpful.
