Realizing the importance of Smartphones to the future of the mobile professional, HP last week announced that their handheld business would be separated from the notebook systems business—allowing them to improve their market focus and better serve the enterprise demand for converged devices. While laptops are considered a mature market, the converged handheld space is witnessing rapid change—perhaps in part driven by Microsoft’s Windows Mobile.
This move also helps HP be in a better position to develop “BlackBerry killers,” now that RIM is seen to be wavering in the corporate space (thanks to a continuing patent-infringement battle).
It should be interesting to see the iPAQ equivalent of the Treo 700w, when it becomes available.
