The Walt Disney Company took the dust covers off of an initial test of a set-top box for over-the-air on-demand movie rentals first performed in 2004 and has formed a new company to launch the technology called MovieBeam.
Disney was joined by other companies, which have invested in MovieBeam, such as Cisco Systems and Intel Corporation.
The MovieBeam System consists of a set-top box, a small indoor antenna, and a remote control.
The set-top box comes already loaded with 100 movies, while new movies are delivered over-the-air to the system on a weekly basis.
The system itself will be sold at retailers, such as BestBuy, CompUSA, and Sears, and through some select Internet retailers. The MovieBeam System will retail for US$199.99 after an introductory rebate of $50. A USB device is being developed to add the service to PCs.
The initial deployment of the MovieBeam service will be limited to 29 metropolitan areas.
Once installed, the service will charge a one-time activation fee of $29.99. Movies can then be viewed from the service for $3.99 for new releases and $1.99 for library titles. HD movies will cost an extra $1. Each rental will allow the subscriber viewing for one 24 hour period.
