Guide to Motherboard Fundamentals

If you've ever built your own personal computer (or just peeked inside the one you purchased from
Bestbuy), you already know that it's made up of quite a few different parts. Now in today's home pc market (driven by games that demand more and more horsepower), there's little doubt that the "Motherboard" doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Think about it, when you shop for a computer (or are just checking out the latest laptops/personal computers), what's the first thing you look at? Maybe the processor speed or if you're a gamer, perhaps you devote your attention to the video card. I've noticed that even the size of the computer's hard drive seems to take precedence over a comprehensive look at the motherboard.
In truth, the computer's motherboard is essentially the backbone of the system and it really has a lot to do with how happy you will be with your system in the years to come. The ability to simply upgrade your old computer (perhaps with a new chip or more memory) instead of having to buy a completely new system, has a lot more to do with the motherboard than it does with what type of video card you possess.
In light of that, Ars Technica has published a really interesting online guide to the computer motherboard. It's definitely worth a look, and at the very least, you'll come away with a better sense of how the computer motherboard fits in with all of the various components that make up your home pc.
