Sony Introduces Free Internet Phone Service

This entry was posted in the following categories: News, Web services

Another day brings us another entrant into the ubiquitous web-based phone service market. ThisVoIP time it's Sony, which is rolling out its new service in tandem with the latest versions of their Vaio Laptops. While traditional phone companies are struggling to keep their customers, a number of broadband based services have sprung up. These now include services from AOL, Yahoo, and eBay (with their recent purchase of Skype).

Sony joins the fray just as a recent Gartner report estimates that by 2009, 70% of voice connections around the world will be wireless. While traditional phone companies are slowly rolling out VoIP services of their own, it's unlikely to be as great a revenue stream as traditional phone service once was (Web phone service is much less expensive).
