Microsoft to Eliminate Hidden Sony Rootkit

While Sony recently agreed to halt their controversial CD copy protection scheme, what do you do if
you have already used one of these CD's in your computer? While Sony has released a patch, you might be forgiven for being a little cautious about installing any additional software from Sony.
To the rescue comes Microsoft (how many times do you get to say that?) which announced that it will update its numerous security tools to eradicate the hidden Sony rootkit left by the copy protection (on some user's computers).
Consumers generally don't like hidden copy protection files to be secretly sprayed into every nook and cranny of their PC's, and in this case, there was an excellent reason for a healthy dose of criticism directed in Sony's direction. It turns out that the secret files left by certain Sony CD's, are actually proving a security risk for consumers that used them. As of today, there are already remotely-controlled trojans that can take advantage and gain entry to a PC through a vulnerability opened up by the Sony rootkit.
